What Do Slogans Have to do with News?

MSNBC's slogan is "Lean Forward and I am not sure what that even means. FoxNews has "Fair and Balanced" which I understand, but people confuse the opinionated talking heads with the straight news so it doesn't appear fair and balanced and their slogan falls flat.  I didn't even know that CNN had a slogan as I wasn't even sure they existed anymore.  When I looked their slogan up I found out that they are still in business, who knew that was even possible?  They bill themselves as the "Most Trusted News" which seems unlikely as they only have about 12 viewers and most of those are cousins of the commentators.

Why do I bring this up?  It is because they have failed us in a million different ways.  I realize that most people believe that news organizations serve the public good but is that really true?  Aren't they organizations seeking to make a profit and stay in business?  They have sponsors and advertisers that they have to please. Is it possible that the news is tainted by their need to make money?

For instance, Time Warner owns the beleaguered and forlorn CNN and when you go to their webpage you see the headline:

'Dark Knight Rises' climbs to No. 2 at the 2012 worldwide box office

They report it as news but is it truly news or promotion?  The same company owns both CNN and the rights to Dark Knight.  There is a blurring between making money and reporting news.

What does this have to do with slogans and news?  Not much, but then there isn't much real news on news shows any more anyway.
