The Cost of Coffee and a Pastry

My daughter dropped about 1200 hints in the span of 30 minutes about how she loved danishes and donuts but we just never have them.  I thought about getting some but then got sidetracked thinking about how expensive those bars of pure sugar and fat are now.

Just a few years ago I could buy an 9 pack of "breakfast danish" for about $3.  It is now a little bit over $8 to buy the same danishes.  Its just crazy!  If I went out to buy some coffee and a pastry so that I could actually write this blog with the essential ingredients in hand, I would pay about $4.50 for the coffee (it has to be BIG) and another 2 to 3 dollars for a danish.  With a tip for the perky little helper, that brings my morning indulgence to nearly $10.  Our local entry level Walmart workers have to work about an hour to make enough to buy that tasty treat.  And before you bash Walmart for its "slave wages", our local government hires for less than that.  So, technically, the entry level office worker at the county offices would have to work more than an hour for the delectable pastry and coffee I am theoretically enjoying.

As an aside, before I get any letters about placing my comma outside of my quotation marks, it is a habit left over from writing my thesis.  Apparently it is the new APA rule.  Now I don't know what is right anymore for "normal" writing.  Next thing you know they are going to tell me that Pluto isn't a planet.
